Clare Christian

Director of Operations (UK Office)
Award-winning editor and publisher

Clare is a highly experienced editor, publisher, and entrepreneur. She has worked at Big-5 publishing houses and founded two publishing businesses, The Friday Project and RedDoor Press, as well as an author consultancy company.

A past winner of the British Council/London Book Fair UK Publisher of the Year, she has published award-winning fiction and non-fiction titles, and launched the careers of bestselling authors Caroline Smailes (now writing as Caroline Cauchi) and Heidi Perks.

She is passionate about working with authors to help them make good publishing choices and ensure their book is the best it can possibly be. She is fascinated by the business of publishing, even after 20+ years, and is often invited to speak or write about topics such as the challenges within the industry, and why new business models are so important.

Clare is also a committed advocate for improving representation in industries and communities. She co-founded and launched the ADCI Prize, a literary award dedicated to improving positive representation of disability in fiction. In addition, she played a key role in launching the #keepfestivalshybrid campaign, an initiative encouraging festival, conference, and event organisers to maintain an online element to ensure accessibility for a wider audience and promote full inclusivity.

She also teaches on the publishing module of the MA in Creative Writing and Publishing at West Dean College and is on the judging panel for the Authors’ Club Best First Novel Award.

She loves popular science and business books, and her favourite fiction authors include Philippe Claudel and Stefan Zweig.
